BlockThreat - Week 22, 2026
$19M stolen across 14 incidents. It’s always darkest before the dawn.
Another week with more than $19M stolen across 14 incidents. The mood in DeFi has really turned grim with several old guards, most notably Manuel Araoz, former CTO of OpenZeppelin, declaring DeFi effectively unsafe:

Declaring the entire ecosystem unsafe with no solutions, no hope, no path forward is a ridiculous stance. Let's remember those who so easily called it quit on the ecosystem that nourished them. This is the same industry that built their careers and reputations, yet they’re abandoning it during these challenging times.
DeFi and the cryptocurrency industry as a whole will succeed not because it can, but because it must. The alternative of going back to governments that can seize your funds at will, bankers extracting arbitrary fees to enrich themselves, institutions that have repeatedly failed everyday people is simply unacceptable.
As Yoav, Vitalik, and Marissa have so eloquently put it in The Trustless Manifesto:
We build on Ethereum because we choose verification over blind trust.
We write code so that power cannot hide behind policy.
We design protocols so that freedom does not depend on permission.
Ethereum was not created to make finance efficient or apps convenient.
It was created to set people free — to empower anyone, anywhere to coordinate without permission and without trusting anyone they cannot hold accountable.
Yes, it's bad right now and the pillaging will likely continue for a while. But it's not the full picture. We’ve seen these cycles before. Panic comes first, followed by the serious builders who adopt the new tools and techniques to make the ecosystem far stronger than it was.
This moment is a forcing function. Instead of capitulating, let’s demand better defensive tooling, smarter protocol design, stronger auditors, and security as the absolute #1 priority.
Stay vigilant, stay informed, and let's build the version of DeFi that survives this and many more challenges ahead.
Let’s dive into the news!
